The Pearl Trust currently has 2 students who we are supporting through school.
Martha Akialo is 11yrs old and Shirley Acamo is 13yrs old.The girls parenets both work full time but despite this, they still struggle to pay school fees for their 4 girls.
On this sponsorship programme the parents are expected to pay, up front and first of all, 50% of the yearly school fees.Any sponsors then pay the remaining 50%. This is done to encourage the parents to have ‘ownership’ of their childs education.
Martha will be attending Kiira Primary School. Shirley is attending her first year at St. Peter’s High School. Both schools are in Jinja District.
High school is where alot of girls in Uganda end their education, usually due to a lack of funds. As their education is lacking, this more often that not, leads to a life living in poverty. These school sponsorship programs aim to break this poverty cycle.
The schools Grace and Franco choose for their girls are all boarding schools. This is because they are more protected from being ‘got at’ by boys if they have to run the gauntlet of coming home everyday from a day school. Martha would love to be a bank manager and Shirley aims to become a doctor.
